February 21, 2008: The only Trek soundtrack on the horizon would be the "Star Trek XI" soundtrack due in May of 2009. Hang in there!

May 14, 2008: On June 13-15, 2008 I will be riding in the Trek Across Maine, a 3-day, 180-mile bike ride to benefit the American Lung Association. I'd certainly appreciate the support of my fellow Star Trek fans in this noble effort. Afterall, there are no new soundtracks out, so what else are you going to do with all that cash lying around? Other than an aversion to giving money away to strangers, why wouldn't you? - Robert Oliver, Star Trek Soundtracks Webmaster.

March 4, 2008: Film and television composer Leonard Rosenman, who won two Oscars and two Emmys during his 50-year Hollywood career, died Tuesday. He was 83. Rosenman died of a heart attack at his home at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital, said family friend Jon Burlingame. A New York native, Rosenman was a concert composer when his friend James Dean introduced him to director Elia Kazan. Kazan asked the composer to write the score for "East of Eden," thus beginning Rosenman's film career. He went on to score dozens of films and television shows. Rosenman won back-to-back Academy Awards in 1975 and '76 for his work on "Barry Lyndon" and "Bound for Glory." He was nominated twice more for his original scores for "Cross Creek" in 1983 and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" in 1986. He also won Emmy Awards for his TV-movie scores for "Sybil" in 1976 and "Friendly Fire" in 1979. Rosenman was survived by his wife, Judie Gregg Rosenman, three children and four grandchildren. - The Associated Press

November 1, 2007: Star Trek XI composer Michael Giacchino has confirmed that he will be retaining the original series theme for the upcoming movie.

November 15, 2006: The Official Star Trek site has an article on The Sourced Music of Star Trek. This feature covers all five Trek series. Also, Film Score Monthly Online has an article on the re-recorded TOS theme used in the recent remastered episodes. You do need to be a FSM Online member to read this article.

September 7, 2006: Gregory Smith, who scored a handful of DS9 episodes and worked as an orchestrator on Enterprise, is conducting the newly re-recorded opening theme for the upcoming CGI-enhanced HD remastered versions of the original Star Trek series. A video preview of the remaster work features a brief sequence on the "new" theme song. It should be noted that this new opening theme is using the original arrangements.

Star Trek to get new CGI effectsAugust 31, 2006: CBS Paramount has announced that the original Star Trek series is getting a CGI face-lift. Of particular note to music fans, the opening theme is being re-recorded, "The refurbished episodes also feature higher quality sound for the famous opening theme. The original score by Emmy Award-winning composer Alexander Courage, has been re-recorded in state-of-the-art digital stereo audio with an orchestra and a female singer belting out the famous vocals." This will undoubtedly not sit well with some fans, but keep in mind that the original episodes with the original music are not going to be lost forever.

August 23, 2006: Although he has not been officially confirmed as the composer for "Star Trek XI," Michael Giacchino commented to IGN recently about his involvement in the next Trek feature film.

April 22, 2006: We have a pulse...Star Trek lives! The official Star Trek site confirms that J.J. Abrams, creator and producer of ABC's hit show Lost, will be producing and directing "Star Trek XI." Although it is far too early to know who will score the film, it is probably a safe bet that Michael Giacchino, who has scored other Abrams projects, will be the one chosen for the task. Michael's official site is down at the time of this writing, but you can check out his work at IMDB.
