November 14, 2003: Enterprise Executive Producer Rick Berman comments on the change in the Enterprise theme song ("Where My Heart Will Take Me") in the current issue of Star Trek Communicator. Berman indicates that the producers are very happy with the theme song, and wanted only to "energize" it for a change of pace.

September 15, 2003: The Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Dramatic Underscore) was won by Sean Callery for the series 24. Dennis McCarthy had been nominated for his score to "The Expanse."

September 13, 2003: According to his official web site, Velton Ray Bunch will be scoring two upcoming Enterprise episodes, the first of which will begin scoring on September 16th.

September 10, 2003: Advanced reviews of the Season 3 opening episode "The Xindi" reveal that the opening title sequence remains largely the same, with the only change being revised music.

I've had a chance to see the new opening, and considering that the visuals have not changed, it's difficult to understand why the music was altered (the vocals appear to be the same). The new remix certainly doesn't match up with Enterprise's new mission--the pursuit of the Xindi and the defense of Earth, so why make the change?

July 17, 2003: Dennis McCarthy's score for the Enterprise episode "The Expanse" has been nominated for an Emmy: Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Dramatic Underscore). Without knowing the process by which a score is nominated, it is surprising that Brian Tyler's "Canamar" score was not nominated. The winner for this category will be announced on September 13, 2003. (Creative Arts awards are handed out before the main Emmy presentations on September 21, 2003).

July 12, 2003: Production on Enterprise's third season is well under way, and previous reports that the main title sequence and theme song would be changed appear to be false.

June 3, 2003: The official web site of Enterprise composer Brian Tyler is now online.

May 7, 2003: A new and very rare soundtrack has been added to Star Trek Soundtracks. Ron Jones and Brian Luzietti's score to the computer game Starfleet Academy was packaged with some versions of the game, but the soundtrack was never available for sale separately. It's taken years to find a copy, but I finally found one.

May 6, 2003: Composer Mark McKenzie has five MP3 samples from his "Horizon" score available on his official web site.

May 2, 2003: SyFy Portal is reporting that Enterprise will receive a new opening credit sequence for its third season. The article makes mention of the current Enterprise theme song, but does not indicate if there are plans to replace it with something else.

April 16, 2003: Season 2 of Enterprise has given us another new Trek composer. Mark McKenzie made his Trek debut tonight with the episode "Horizon." McKenzie does have a connection with Trek music, as he has served as an orchestrator for Star Trek Nemesis, Star Trek Generations and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

March 7, 2003: Brian Tyler will be scoring "Regeneration," an upcoming Enterprise episode featuring the Borg. A transcript of Tyler's chat with Sci-Fi.com is available.

February 26, 2003: With tonight's Enterprise episode, "Canamar," we have a new composer in the fold: Brian Tyler, who has also scored the upcoming Children of Dune miniseries for the Sci Fi Channel. The Sci Fi Channel will be holding a chat with Tyler on March 5, 2003.

SACD logoFebruary 25, 2003: Varese Sarabande Records released the SACD Special Edition of the Star Trek Nemesis soundtrack on February 25, 2003. SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) is a multi-channel, high resolution (64 times the sampling rate of a CD) format that competes with DVD-Audio. A hybrid disc, this release will contain three versions of the score; multichannel SACD, stereo SACD, and stereo CD. The Star Trek Nemesis SACD Special Edition will play in regular CD players, but you will need an SACD player in order to get the full multi-channel, high-res experience. Although it is labeled as a "Special Edition" on the Varese Sarabande web site, the actual packaging makes no reference to this, and the musical content (as well as the artwork and most of the liner notes) is the same as the original CD release.

STS-107February 1, 2003: Space Shuttle Columbia (OV-102) has been destroyed while attempting reentry. All seven crewmembers were lost. Video of debris falling from the sky over Texas shows that the shuttle disintegrated in the atmosphere. STS-107 was the 113th space shuttle mission. Columbia's crew were:

  • Colonel Rick Husband (USAF)
  • Commander William McCool (USN)
  • Lt. Colonel Michael Anderson (USAF)
  • Commander Laurel Clark, M.D. (USN)
  • Captain David Brown (USN)
  • Kalpana Chawla, Ph.D.
  • Colonel Ilan Ramon (Israeli Air Force)
