LINER NOTES

"We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile. We are the Borg."

In STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the newly-commissioned Enterprise-E battle the insidious Borg to restore the rightful future of Earth. Reprising their starring roles as the crew of the Enterprise are PATRICK STEWART (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), JONATHAN FRAKES (Commander William Riker), LEVAR BURTON (Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), MICHAEL DORN (Lieutenant Commander Worf), GATES McFADDEN (Dr. Beverly Crusher), MARINA SIRTIS (Counselor Deanna Troi) and BRENT SPINER (android Lieutenant Commander Data). Joining the cast are actors ALFRE WOODARD (PRIMAL FEAR, HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT) and JAMES CROMWELL (BABE).

Principal photography began April 8, 1996 on STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, the first sequel to the 1994 hit STAR TREK GENERATIONS, and the eight in the long-running, successful "Star Trek" film franchise. STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT marks the first film in the series whose crew is solely comprised of the cast of the Emmy award-winning series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION.

For this latest entry in the STAR TREK saga, Rick Berman hired veteran composer Jerry Goldsmith to write a dark, moody score for the film. For STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, Jerry creates a sweeping, melodic Main Title which is heralded by the famous Alexander Courage fanfare. He also creates a menacing metallic march as well as ethereal synth textures to underscore the Borg. Jerry also makes good use of his previous motion picture themes throughout the score. His theme from STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE is heard in the cues "Red Alert" as well as the End Credits while his famous Klingon theme fittingly underscores the heroics of Lieutenant Worf.

Certainly no newcomer to STAR TREK, Jerry has previously scored both STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE and STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER as well as the Emmy-winning Main Title for the TV series STAR TREK: VOYAGER. In doing the music for the first STAR TREK movie to exclusively feature the cast from STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, it somehow seems fitting that Jerry's son Joel Goldsmith be brought in to assist scoring chores. After proving his worth to producers Rick Berman and Peter Lauritson, Joel came in and composed about 22 minutes of music alongside his father. Himself an accomplished composer, Joel has scored many motion pictures such as MOON 44, HOME FOR CHRISTMAS, JOBMAN and MAN's BEST FRIEND. He also has scored many television shows such as THE UNTOUCHABLES, O'HARA, HAWKEYE, THE WATCHER and others.

Jerry remains one of the most respected and celebrated composers working in film today. A recipient of numerous awards and nominations, he won an Academy Award for Best Score for THE OMEN, and was nominated for Best Original Score on 15 other occasions. Among the nominated films are STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, BASIC INSTINCT, CHINATOWN, POLTERGEIST, PATTON, THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL, PAPILLON, THE WIND AND THE LION, PLANET OF THE APES and others. His recent film credits include THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS, EXECUTIVE DECISION, FIRST KNIGHT, CONGO, THE RIVER WILD, THE SHADOW, BAD GIRLS, MALICE, SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION, RUDY, THE VANISHING, and many more. For television, he has won Emmy Awards for Best Original Score for QB VII, THE RED PONY, MASADA, and BABE. He resides in Beverly Hills with his wife Carol and their son Aaron.
