LINER NOTES by Robert Derwae

The past decade has seen a remarkable resurgence of so-called "fantastic" or "space" films, a lumpy category that includes science fiction, horror and fantasy-adventure. This renaissance has elevated the genre to an unprecedented level of critical and popular acclaim and renewed interest in larger-than-life orchestral film scores, the best of which add crucial narrative support and emotional resonance to movies.

This is the fourth release in Telarc's series of fantasy film recordings by Erich Kunzel and the splendid Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Like its predecessors, Star Tracks (CD-80094), Time Warp (CD-80106) and Star Tracks II (CD-80146), Fantastic Journey celebrates the film composer's art, but its coverage of historical and stylistic ground is somewhat more adventurous. From Bernard Herrmann's influential score for the early sci-fi film The Day the Earth Stood Still, to wunderkind Danny Elfman's impressive Batman score, Fantastic Journey sonically and thrillingly explores the dimension that, as Rod Serling put it, lies somewhere "between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge."

(For brevity's sake only the liner notes relating to the Star Trek tracks are included here).

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the fifth installment in the Star Trek saga, was directed by William Shatner, whom all Trekkies know as Captain James T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise. The 1989 release didn't receive good reviews—the dialogue is riddled with California pyschobabble and the desultory plot is logically untethered—but no matter; Mr. Spock and all the familiar characters are back in town, there's evil to be combated and there's the eternal promise of what lies beyond the Great Barrier. As is usually the case, Goldsmith's unfailing craftsmanship enabled him to produce a score that bears repeated listenings.
